Magna Carta Crime

Police arrested a 45-year-old man on the suspicion of trying to steal an original copy of the Magna Carta from Salisbury Cathedral in southern England.

The cathedral houses one of only four remaining copies of the Magna Carta, which is one of the most important legal manuscripts in the world. King John of England signed it in 1215 AD, and it enshrined the basic rights on the principle that no one is above the law – not even England’s kings and queens.

Alarms activated when a man smashed the glass box with the document inside. Luckily, it was undamaged during the incident, but people have temporarily removed it.

Difficult words: suspicion (a belief – the police are not sure it was him), legal (relating to the law), manuscripts (a handwritten document), enshrine (preserve in a form that will be protected and respected), temporarily (for some time, not forever).
