學者Barney主張資源觀點的定義是，當企業具有有價值、極稀少、不易模仿、不可替代的核心資源及能力時，則該企業擁有持續的競爭優勢。有別於結構學派由外而內的策略思考邏輯，資源基礎觀點強調由內而外的策略思考，專注於創造、發展、累積、應用企業自身的核心資源和能力，配合策略執著，來因應變動劇烈的外在環境，創造競爭優勢。



Barney (1991: "Firm resources andsustained competitive advantage") made clear that abnormal rents can beearned from resources to the extent that they are VRIN:
Barney 在1991年發表的《企業資源與可持續競爭優勢》 （Firm Resources and Sustained Competitive Advantage）一文中明確指出，超常的租值在一定程度上是可以通過「VRIN」資源來獲得。這裡，VRIN的含義是：


*Valuable (when they enable a firm to conceive or implement strategies thatimprove its efficiency or effectiveness)
* Valuable，即有價值的資源，它是公司構想和執行企業策略、提高效率和效能的基礎。

* Rare (valuable firm resources possessed bylarge numbers of competing firms can not be sources of either a competitiveadvantage or a sustainable competitive advantage)
* Rare，即稀少的資源，資源即便再有價值，一旦為大部分公司所擁有，它也不能帶來競爭優勢或者可持續的競爭優勢。

*Imperfectly Imitable (because of {a combination of}three reasons: unique historical conditions, causally ambiguous, socialcomplex)
* Imperfectly Imitable，即不易模仿的資源，一般需同時具備以下三點特徵： 歷史條件獨特、起因模糊，以及具有社會負責性。

*Non-Substitutable (there must not be strategically equivalent valuableresources that are themselves either not rare or imitable)
* Non-Substitutable，即難以替代的資源，不能夠存在一種即可複製又不稀缺的替代品。
